Lake Natron

"Pure nature in a virgin land of ancient origin"

Wild and remote Lake Natron lies in the northeast of Tanzania in between the Ngorongoro Highlands and Serengeti plains. Situated at the base of Africa's only active volcano Oldonyo L'Engai (Mountain of God).

Lake Natron is one of the most alkaline lakes in the world. Home to millions of tiny crustaceans, the lake is a haven for literally thousands of lesser flamingo's and it is one of the most important flamingo breeding grounds on earth.

Here it is the landscape rather than the animals that is the attraction - the area around the lake is dry, desolate and hauntingly beautiful.  Prices range from $170-$300 per person per night full board.

Lake Natron River Camp (Mid-Range)

Lake Natron River Camp consists of only 6 tents with ensuite shower and toilett. The dining place is facing Lake Natron and Ol donyo Lengai giving a spectacular view of both.  Prices range from $170-$300 per person per night full board.

This area is hot and often very dry and dusty – especially for the more intrepid traveller. But for those who do choose to visit Natron, they are rewarded with an area that is far off the beaten track and sees relatively little tourism.

Lake Natron, in Africa’s Great Rift Valley, practically sends a warning with its color. This bright red lake is the world’s most caustic body of water, but not to everything. An endemic species of fish, the alkaline tilapia, lives along the edges of the hotspring inlets, and the lake actually derives its color from salt-loving microorganisms that thrive in its alkaline waters. Spirulina, a blue-green algae with red pigments, passes its pigments along to the lesser flamingos that feed on the algae and raise their young here.
